About the craft: Langas are hereditary communities of professional musicians living mostly in the Jodhpur and Barmer districts of western Rajasthan. They belong to the Sindhi community and are Muslim by religion. Their music has survived decades owing to the Jajmani system which is fundamental to their art form and also a source of livelihood. The musicians sing a wide variety of folk songs catering to lifecycle, seasons, rituals, festivals, folklores and also Sufiyana Kalam and Qawwali. The Langas have two categories based on the type of Jajmans they serve; the Sarangiya Langas, who play the Sindhi Sarangi and the Surnaiya Langas who play Algoza, Shehnai and Murli.
