This is one of four 6-cent Natural History commemorative stamps that were first placed on sale in New York, New York, on May 6, 1970, where the American Museum of Natural History was observing its centennial year. Founded in 1869, the museum is considered one of the foremost in its field of natural sciences and anthropology. It is located in Theodore Roosevelt Park in New York City.
The stamps were designed by Walter Richards and was issued in panes of thirty-two, with an initial printing of 150 million.
