American doll artist Dorothy Wendell Heizer constructed her cloth dolls from copper-wire skeletons over which she built bodies of cotton eiderdown covered by cotton or silk crepe. She stitched hands from leather or cotton crepe. She needle sculpted faces and painted details with water colors. Heizer used vintage fabrics for all her doll clothing and showcased her slavish attention to detail. Her 1948 rendition of Elizabeth II's wedding dress, for example, included 45,000 hand-sewn seed pearls and beads. Her doll of Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara faithfully replicates the dress made of dining room curtains in the classic 1939 movie "Gone with the Wind."
