Skoklosters, Sweden

Full length baroque portrait of Field marshal Rudolf von Colloredo. Colloredo was the commander in chief of the defence of Prague when the Swedish army attacked in 1648. Although a prominent character in Europe at that time, there are not that many portraits connected to his name and this must arguably be considered as one of the best. The painting was taken from Prague as war booty by the Swedish army in 1648.

There he was much favoured and stayed in the city until Leopold I was elected new emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1657, and then moved with him to Vienna. Initially under the influence of Rubens Luyckx mainly focused on historical and New Testament themes. These subjects were, however, abandoned soon after he came to Prague where he devoted himself to portraits of the imperial family, courtiers, generals and other important figures.
