Using the European telecommunications satellite OTS-2, launched in May 1978, this experiment was exploring ways of sending large amounts of data accurately over long distances and at high speeds. As well as CERN, STELLA involved DESY (Germany), Saclay (France), the Rutherford Laboratory (UK), Pisa (Italy), Dublin (Ireland) and Graz (Austria) with the support of the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Economic Community (EEC) and the post and tele-graph (PTT) authorities in the respective countries.
