Man was at the center of Friedrich von Bömches' artistic concerns, which is why he made portraits of historical or contemporary personalities, but also numerous self-portraits at different ages. Influenced by Nordic and German expressionism, his work indicates a deep inner turmoil through strong color contrasts, gloomy chromaticism and sporadic light accents. The name Johannes Honterus (1498-1549) is strongly linked to the city of Brașov. Known as a Saxon humanist scholar from Transylvania and a religious reformer, he founded the Saxon gymnasium in the courtyard of the Black Church, a high school that now bears his name. The first printing house in Brașov, among the first in Transylvania, is due to him.
