Everybody knows the game Croquet today. But when this song was published in 1866, the game was still very young in America. Croquet began in England about ten years earlier and became quite popular. Sheet music titles tend to reflect popular trends, and "Croquet" is no different. Some people criticized the game because it allowed for men and women to play a sport together. This is also very likely a reason for its success. This song's cover illustration cleverly shows that men and women did play--and sometimes stopped to rest--together.
