This painting by Francis Lee Jaques depicts the little brown bat in flight. The bat's small, furry body and silky, stretched wings soar high above a green landscape of stylized forest and field. This bat was once abundant, but has faced severe declines from white-nose syndrome and remains susceptable to collisions with wind turbines. For these reasons, this small, winged mammal is protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. This painting is one of over 3,000 small-scale watercolors commissioned by the National Wildlife Federation and used for their conservation stamps. The stamps were produced from the 1930s-1990s to promote the mission and work of the National Wildlife Federation.
