Festival in the Capital Kyoto

17th century (Edo period)

Sakai City Museum
Sakai-shi, Osaka, Japan

Various shops, three-storied warehouse, wooden gate at the entrance of every alley, and the likes are depicted comparatively large. Festival floats in the lower part might be associated with the Gion Festival, a summer festival in Kyoto, but the Moso-yama float on the sixth panel, based on the story of digging a bamboo shoot in the snow (one of the 24 Filial Duties), has a large turtle on its base, which doesn’t appear with that of the Gion Festival, so there is a possibility that it’s showing a festival of another city. People enjoying the festival, or shopping on the streets, are depicted vividly. Gold leaves are attached on the road, and silver dust is sprinkled on the clouds.
