Books on a Shelf

John Frederick Petolate 19th-early 20th century

This still-life shows a rough wooden shelf on which old books have been placed haphazardly. A strong light from the left accentuates the volume of the books and the wear and tear on their covers. A feather pen in an ink bottle suggests that perhaps the painting depicts a corner in a scholar's studio, and the half-burned candle could be meant as a reminder of the brevity of life.
