This boot is part of a four-piece inflight coverall garment sized for astronaut Russell "Rusty" Schweickart, who flew on Apollo 9 in March 1969. The boot however, was not flown and was transferred to the National Air and Space Museum from NASA in 1979.The complete garment, made by the B. Welson Company, consists of jacket, trousers and boots which had a circular Velcro patch on the soles. It is constructed of a Teflon-coated beta cloth which is highly fire resistant, and the "slippery" qualities of the fabric enabled the astronaut to don and doff the garment with ease in a weightless environment. The jacket had a US flag on the left shoulder and a NASA "meatball" logo on the upper torso. Flight garments also had a mission symbol attached to the upper torso.
