In Korean society, a convenience store means more than just a space where people can easily purchase everyday items around the clock. The convenience store quickly took hold in Korea along with the decline of traditional retailers and the expansion of modern distribution channels. Some depict it as a dark microcosm of Korea as well as a space reserved for the disadvantaged party of a franchise contract. In 2017 Gwangu Design Biennales, however, Hong strips away its dark shadow of capitalism, which has marked its place as an inevitable part of our lives. Instead, she displays somewhat playful and optimistic installations which fuse the languages of art and design.
