This is the original drawing for plate XIV in the first edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director (1754) and included as plate XI in the third edition of 1762. For Chippendale's prefatory notes see LEEAG.CHIPSOC.1975.4b. The drawing is inscribed top left ‘No 14' and right ‘3'. The rear left leg stumps are added in pencil. The manuscript was pirated from the albums of original Chippendale drawings purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1920. It has been dismounted from the numbered leaf of blue wove paper with which was cut from the album.
