1979 Holden VB Commodore SL Sedan

Front and left hand side view of 1979 Holden. Following the oil crises of the 1970s, GM Holden decided to introduce a more compact family car. The Commodore, based on the Rekord model built by Opel (a German marque in the General Motors group), was marketed as Holden’s ‘car of the future’. The first in the series, the VB Commodore, was launched in November 1978. Its body design was largely based on the Opel Rekord E, but it was fitted with an Australian-built engine and tested extensively on the company’s proving grounds at Lang Lang for suitability to Australian road conditions. It was produced from 1978 to 1980, the shortest production run of any Commodore.
The VB Commodore was a smaller size to Holden’s previous family car, the Kingswood. It was praised for its value for money and engineering sophistication and won the 1979 Wheels ‘Car of the Year’. The Commodore became one of Australia’s most popular family cars.
