800-YEAR OLD FLOUR MILL STILL DRIVEN BY WATER. E.M./MAEERS. The village of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, possesses what is believed to be the only working water driven mill in the country. It has been in constant use for grinding locally grown corn since it was built by some Monks in 1158. The actual water wheel was renewed nearly a hundred years ago but the original millstones and other working parts are still in use. The methods at the Winchcombe mill needed no change when wholemeal flour was introduced, for it has always produced this type of flour. Photo shows:- Sacks of corn are hoisted to the top of the mill by pulleys driven from the water wheel. Here the corn is tipped into hoppers from which it falls into the mills on the next floor.
