It is believed in Haryana that a pinch of salt and a piece of iron when tied in a red coloured cloth near the mother and her newborn child keeps them in good health and wards off evil energies. This khaat was one such example. It was used by the mother and her child for sleeping. The red cloth was tied on one of the corners of the webbing and covered with a cotton mattress.
