Portrait of "José Hipólito Unanue y Pavón" (Arica, 1755-Lima, 1833) by Rafael Ortega. He was a physician, naturalist, meteorologist, university professor and politician. He contributed to the formation of the Sociedad Amantes del País (1790) and El Mercurio Peruano. He founded the College of Medicine of San Fernando (1808), which later became part of the University of San Marcos. He is considered a hero of independence and father of Peruvian medicine.
