Untamable Light is rich with intermedia gesture—painting, photography, collage, installation, poetry, books all interact and collide here in a symphonic synthesis about imagination and territoriality. Mejer Caso posits that a new world outside concepts of the nation, through language. With Untamable Light, we begin to see through to a new society towards what is truly possible when we mix visual art and literature, continents and capabilities. Untamable light is the unfolding of a book in exhibition form. All that you can see in this space and outside on the waterpower of Aspinwall yard are various chapters of this book: room 1 is the ‘True Loves’ chapter and it maps spaces of Mexico and India; chapter 2 is ‘Lonely Structures’ and it is based on the surrealistic work of Barry Shapiro and reflects upon the world as a poetic territory; and chapters 3 and 4 culminates as a reflection on painting through a poem-film on the potential of survival. Untamable Light helps us imagine what a new community might be, a poetic imaginary that crosses boundaries and refuses to accept the limits of what we take for granted. It is as much a new flag in the ground as it is a space to reflect on what we may yet become.
