Making of a "Mummy"

Specimens with fossilized skin impressions, such as this one, are relatively rare because soft tissues such as skin, muscles and organs decompose more quickly than bone after death. The carcass must be rapidly buried after death in to prevent predators and microbes from initiating destruction or decay.
