Two-tone lipstick

Tokyo, Japan

Two-tone lipstick is lip rouge made from dyes that changes color before and after application (left). When Western lipsticks first began to be imported into Japan, red was the primary lipstick color (right). However, as Japanese women gradually started to accept lip rouge in the shape of a stick, two-tone lipsticks were overwhelmingly favored as the shades went well with Japanese-style clothing. They remained popular until around 1955.
