Before Hasbro, Inc. introduced its hugely successful My Little Pony (MLP) line of miniature equestrian figures, the toy company offered My Pretty Pony in 1981. About ten inches tall, made of brown hard plastic, and looking something like an ol' country nag, it wasn't particularly pretty. Her long blonde mane and tail, however, invited combing, brushing, and braiding, and it came with its own comb, brush, and hair ribbons, as well as a red blanket and western-style hat. Though lacking the pretty pastel colors and charming symbols of the MLPs that followed in 1982, My Pretty Pony was not without beguiling moves. With a lever beneath her chin, she could wiggle her ears, swish her tail, and throw a coy wink of her left eye. Such tricks could not compete with the My Little Ponies that featured colors of every hue, sparkling bodies, and glittering symbols. Hasbro ceased production of the pretty equine while it produced MLPs by the millions for nearly two decades.
