For a series of watercolours, Schiele arranged his girlfriend in a sexual embrace with his painter-colleague Felix Albrecht Harta. Here, the man assumes the traditional female position, while the woman seems to penetrate the man from between his legs. Thus, Schiele’s own ambivalence can be seen in his models, as well: to be a man—and at the same time to feel feminine.
