A Limosa haemastica, or Hudsonian Godwit, specimen from the Smithsonian Institution's USNM Bird Collection. This specimen is the only one collected by Charles Darwin in the collections of the Smithsonian. Darwin collected the specimen from the Falkland Islands in March 1833 during the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle. The field number 1147 on the original label was written by Darwin, who delivered the specimen to John Gould. The specimen identification, Charles Darwin's name, and the date Jan 4, 1837, were written on the label by Gould, who received the specimen from Darwin in London on that date. The locality data and date collected were derived from Darwin's field catalog for number 1147 (see pages 385-386 at http://darwin-online.org.uk/content/frameset?keywords=limosa&pageseq=423&itemID=F1840&viewtype=text).
