Kaawad is a wooden portable shrine which has a series of shutters. Stories from epics and myths are painted on it. These are used by the Kavadia Bhatt, the priests who narrate the epics using the illustrations represented on them. Kaawad are made by artisans of Kumawat community in Bassi village in Chittorgarh.
