William De Morgan is best-known as a ceramic designer. Before he began his ceramic business, he designed various crafts such as this painted panel which decorates a cabinet.
It tells the legend of St George and the dragon. We see the dragon after its capture, being led by the princess it was going to eat. St George kneels before the king, applauded for his heroism by the townspeople on the right hand side of the panel.
It is quite a comical scene, the poor captured dragon looks glum having been caught and denied his princess supper.
