Walter Elmer Schofield was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1867. The son of a successful businessman, he began his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1889.

At the Academy of Fine Arts, Schofield studied under Thomas Anshutz. He also found a mentor in Robert Henri.

Schofield arrived in Paris in 1892 to continue studying at the Academie Julian. In 1903, he settled in Cornwall, England with his wife and children. Though he continued to live in Europe, the artist made frequent trips back to the U.S., where he painted many of his works.

During his lifetime, Schofield won many accolades for his work, including awards from The National Arts Club, National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work can still be found in the permanent collections of some of the worlds most prestigious institutions.
