This multiple rocket launcher developed by the Soviet Union in 1939 is better known as the Katyusha rocket launcher. It was widely used in battles against Nazi German forces during the Second World War, and the characteristic sound made when the rockets were launched earned it the nickname the “Stalin Organ.”
The Katyusha was mounted on a military truck, with 14 to 48 guiding tubes. Like a typical multiplelaunch rocket system, while accuracy was lacking, the Katyusha was able to deliver fire over a broad area. While there were numerous modified versions of various calibers, the Soviets referred to all of these collectively as the Katyushas.
North Korean multiple rocket launcher brigades and regiments adopted the 132mm Katyusha rockets in 1957. The rockets were carried around in their guiding tubes and were launched from the driver’s seat using an electric launcher.
