Catherine II became the empress of Russia in July 1762. Gaining the preponderant influence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became her foremost priority at the beginning of her reign and the interregnum after the death of Augustus III in October 1763 gave her a perfect opportunity for achieving this ambition.
