WHERE TO BUILD A BOAT FOR FIRST PUBLICATION WEDNESDAY'S EVENINGS PHILLIPS K5038 3.6.1967 MR F.W. LAYTON HAD A PROBLEM. HE WANTED TO BUILD HIS OWN BOAT, BUT HE DIDN'T HAVE ANYWHERE TO BUILD IT. THEN SOMEONE SUGGESTED HE DO IT IN HIS FRONT GARDEN. AT FIRST, HE LAUGHED IT OFF, BUT IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE WALKING DOWN THIRLMERE ROAD, LONDON N.W.11, SURE ENOUGH,OUTSIDE No. 42, THERE WILL BE A 4-BERTH, SNAPDRAGON CLASS RACING YACHT. MR LAYTON WEIGHED UP THE PROS AND CONS AND DECIDED THAT HIS FRONT GARDEN WOULD DO PERFECTLY. NOW, 6 MONTHS LATER, THE BOAT IS ALMOST FINISHED. IT COST HIM £300 TO BUILD AND ANOTHER £200 IN MATERIALS, BUT TO MR LAYTON, IT HAS BEEN WELL WORTH IT. THERE WERE ONE OR TWO DIFFICULTIES OF COURSE, SUCH AS THE FITTING OF THE GUNWALLS AND DECK BEAMS BUT THESE PROBLEMS WERE OVERCOME. HE EVEN MADE MANY OF THE SAILS HIMSELF. NOW HE IS WAITING FOR THE BIG DAY OF THE LAUNCHING WHICH WILL BE SOMETIME IN JULY, WHEN HE AND HIS FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE FALMOUTH YACHT CLUB WILL BE TRYING IT OUT FOR SIZE. PHOTO SHOWS: MR LAYTON PUTS IN THE FINAL SCREW OF HIS YACHT IN HIS NORTH LONDON HOME RECENTLY. Industry - Shipbuilding - Small Vessels
