Photographic Subject(s): Shashikala Om Prakash Saigal (née Jawalkar), better known mononymously by her first name, is an Indian film and television actress, who has played supporting roles in over 100 Bollywood films. Rising past the impoverished financial circumstances of her childhood and later, the troubles of her personal life, Shashikala, went on to eventually make her mark in character roles; while her counterparts usually played roles of good-natured, modest, or pious women, Shashikala usually played either flighty and feisty women or vamps who plotted the downfall of others. In late recognition of her talents, she was finally awarded the Maharashtra government's Raj Kapoor Lifetime Contribution award, the Padma Shri and the V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award in the 2000s.
