The title of this work refers to a geometric term for a particular type of curve. The fluid form in this sculpture conveys a spiralling movement similar to that of ocean waves and its green-brown patina on a rough surface gestures to the frothy foam of the Atlantic. Involute II was one of a number of smaller sculptures in 1956 Hepworth made specifically to be cast in bronze. The densely textured surface was achieved by applying thick plaster to an armature of contorted aluminium before casting.
