Mythological stories narrate that Lord Krishna had a strong liking for butter. Because of this, women worship a rai during Govardhan Pooja, a ritual dedicated to the worship of Krishna celebrated a day after Diwali. A red sacred thread was tied on the handle of this rai on one such occasion.
