PRINCE PHILIP TO OPEN £26M. STEEL PLANT TODAY
THE NEW £26,000,000 ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION WORKS AT TINSLEY PARK, SHEFFIELD, WHICH WILL BE OPENED BY PRINCE PHILIP TODAY (TUESDAY) IS CLAIMED TO BE THE MOST ADVANCED PLANT IN EUROPE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SPECIAL ENGINEERING STEELS.
THE PLANT REVOLUTIONISES THE MAKING OF CARBON AND ALLOY STEELS WHICH PREVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED IN COMPARATIVELY SMALL QUANTITIES. THE NEW WORKS, ON THE 500-ACRE SITE OF A DISUSED COLLIERY, CAN PRODUCE UP TO 385,000 TONS OF BILLETS A YEAR WITH AMPLE PROVISION FOR FUTURE EXPANSION.
FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE TINSLEY PARK WORKS PUT SPECIAL STEEL PRODUCTION ON A FLOW BASIS. ONE-HUNDRED-TON ELECTRIC-ARC FURNACES MELT STEEL WHICH CAN THEN BE FED DIRECTLY TO MODERN ROLLING MILLS IN INGOTS OF 2½ TO 5 TONS - WELL IN EXCESS OF THE SIZE PREVIOUSLY USED FOR THE ROLLING OF ALLOY AND SPECIAL CARBON STEELS, EVERY TECHNICAL INNOVATION HAS BEEN INCORPORATED TO ENSURE THE GREATEST POSSIBLE ECONOMY AND TO MAINTAIN A HIGHER QUALITY OF STEEL THAN HAS BEEN POSSIBLE BEFORE.
PHOTO SHOWS: IN THE CONTROL PULPIT FOR THE 20-INCH BAG MILL THIS OPERATOR, AIDED BY CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION, CONTROLS THE MOVEMENTS OF THE BILLETS TO THE FURNACE.
