In 1693, during the reign of King Pedro II, the Apostolic Nuncio Giorgio Cornaro (1658-1722), an Italian of Venetian origins, arrived in Lisbon as the diplomatic representative of the Holy See. His public entrance into the city and visit to the royal place for his first audience with the king, were events of great importance requiring not only very close attention to protocol but also the erecting of temporary structures and decorations that reinvented the scenic backdrop on the places through wich the entourage passed. It is this moment that is here illustrated, in a true/genuine and visual historical record of the city of Lisbon, prior to the earthquake of 1755, of great value.
