Michel Majerus was one of the most significant artists identified with the revitalization of painting in Germany in the late 1990s. In his production, we find an amalgamation of assorted references, ranging from the abstract expressionism of William de Kooning, and its "unique" gestures, to the pop culture celebrated in U.S. rock music, and the ubiquitous predigested aura of advertising. In these works the artist combines classic painting procedures with strategies that challenge tradition and align the work with installations, and such signifiers of pop culture and daily life as stage settings and billboards
