Specially shaped magnets with both bending and focusing properties, installed close to the vacuum chamber, enable greater numbers of secondary particles to be obtained. The photograph here shows the two designed for the pion and kaon beam a₂ , from the CERN PS, mentioned in CERN COURIER in July 1962.
