The Javan rhinoceros is the rarest of the five rhinoceros species. There are only around 50 animals still living in the wild. It is believed that they have died out on the Southeast Asian mainland, with only a few specimens remaining on the island of Java. Destruction of their habitat and poaching have made the Javan rhinoceros highly endangered.
