Marine with Steamboat

Giuseppe Canella (1788-1847) devoted himself mainly to landscape painting, soon proving to be a refined author of a new romantic and atmospheric declination of the view painting. He refers to the Venetian landscape painters of the 18th century and, mainly, to Dutch painting, with its meticulous narrative before stylistic, and the captivating descriptive and environmental notations of animated scenes of modern life. His are northern landscapes in which he represents full moon nights or fishermen on dark and cold seas. In the painting "Marine with Steamboat" several elements present in the scene concur in creating an evocative atmosphere: the leaden clouds seem to blend with the steam of the boat placed in the background, while the impetuous waves threaten the boat in the foreground, almost to suggest an inevitable fate. The view, of great emotional impact, clearly represents the romantic pictorial approach of Giuseppe Canella.
