Before the horseless carriage of the early 20th century, American town and city roads carried a variety of horse-drawn work vehicles including passenger carriages, surreys, hansoms, buggies, and trolleys, as well as delivery wagons supplying an immense variety of consumer goods. Toy makers offered miniature versions of the many types of vehicles and their noble steeds in wood, tin, cast iron, and other metals. Manufacturers made some small vehicles into pull toys, encouraging youngsters to practice their newly acquired walking skills. Others motive vehicles inspired kids to use their imaginations in narrating play of commerce on wheels.
