Already exhausted by the long torment, Jesus collapsed at the foot of the column. He is comforted by angels, who collect His blood; an image that emphasizes the Eucharistic sense of this composition. The flagellation scene usually takes place without witnesses, although in this painting the Virgin, Mother of Sorrows, observes from afar. Moreover, the story of the repentance of Peter after his denial often appears in this subject. Here, the apostle located in an outdoor space is begging the Lord for forgiveness.
