The Virgin and Child are sitting on an apple tree, the shape of which explicitly resembles that of the Tree of Life by the painter Giovanni Segantini (1894).
In the background is a vast Trentino landscape filled with symbols - the cow with her calf, the field of ripe wheat - that evoke prosperity boosted by harmony. In the foreground instead there are the eucharistic symbols of the wine and the bread as well as the Marian symbols of the rose, the lily and the transparent vase, all of which allude to Mary’s virginity.
