This is the Eltham Palace centralised vacuum cleaner. It was used to keep the Palace spotless, the housemaid would have attached a hose to hidden sockets in each room with this equipment. This would have provided the suction necessary to clean every room in the house. It is very unusual to find a system like this in a domestic setting. It is mostly used in public buildings.
