General Grant is standing, dressed in uniform, and looking directly at the viewer. The portrait’s spontaneous, lifelike quality, coupled by its impressive size, suggest that it was artist James Reid Lambdin’s first painting of General Grant, and the one on which he based his other somewhat mechanical versions.
