Trumpet with six independent valves made by Adolphe Sax

Even though this instrument looks very similar to Sax's trombone with six independent valves, the maker called this instrument a 'trompette' because, like the standard trumpet of that time, it is pitched in the key of F.  In addition to Sax's monogram, it also bears the letters 'AF' engraved on the bell below a crown with five pearls--the crest of Comte Adhémar de Foucault (1819-1891).  Foucault, who supported the most important private French band in the nineteenth century, was particularly interested in unusual-looking instruments.  All the instruments in his private collection were engraved with the Count's coat-of-arms and monogram.  Focault's collection survived as a unit until the early 1990s, when it was dispersed through auction.  Sax's trumpet from this group is richly decorated--floral and leaf engravings surround not only the signature and crest, but also adorn the inside of the bell.  Both the valve casings and touch pieces are gold plated.
