Strawberry Shortcake began as a figure on greeting cards in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Kenner marketed the line of scented minidolls in 1980 and included such friends as Huckleberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Apple Dumplin' and many others. An animated TV show, movies, books, clothing and consumer goods kept the series in popular culture for several decades. Recently, dolls in the Strawberry Shortcake line were given a make-over so that they no longer look like the little girls who play with them. The dolls appear as young teenagers with long slender bodies, short skirts and big flirty eyes. Hasbro, who now produces the line, though, still intends the dolls for the preschool set, even though the dolls look like their much older and much more worldly sisters.
