Moths and Bees

The University of Edinburgh Art Collection acquired several pieces from Gasson; a print, two cast brass bees and three flocked moths. Each of these works take their departure from Gasson’s interest in the detail and richness of texture in medieval manuscripts and tapestries but also more broadly a keen interest in collecting, phenomenology and perception. She designed patterns inspired by fourteenth century velvets, Netherlandish paintings and moth flight patterns and explored creating the illusion of pattern to leave the viewer uncertain whether they are facing an artwork or a wallpaper. Using the processes of printmaking and casting Gasson also plays with the notion of the physical trace and tactile nature of objects.
