Still Life with a Dead Stag

Frans Snydersc. 1650

Mauritshuis

Mauritshuis
Den Haag, Netherlands

The Flemish artist Frans Snijders specialised in painting both live and dead animals. Here, the head of a wild boar, a large lobster and a dead stag form a lavish still-life, along with the artichokes and the basket filled with fruit.

The scene by the window, with a parrot and a cat fighting, is characteristic of Snijders’ work. It was a way of making his paintings come to life.
