In 2003, California residents were displeased with their sitting governor Grey Davis. The special vote to recall Davis occasioned the election of his replacement. The 50 to 60 candidates who ran were pretty much blown out of contention by Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former body-builder turned star of Hollywood action films. Schwarzenegger won the election handily, but not before enterprising companies like JDK Products made a farce of the field of candidates by placing many of them on the face of a deck of playing cards.
