Vehnemoor Cloak

In the year
of 1880 a peat cutter found pieces of an old fabric which had a small bronze
bowl attached to it in the bog of vehne, near the village called Littel,
Wardenburg. The analysis of the brown-black stained fabric showed, that it had
to be a unique discovery: It was a fine woven cloth which originally had a
lighter beige coloring. The side of the cloth had a dark red striped edge from
tablet weaving. The fabric had been placed in the bog presumably two centuries
A.D.. The high quality of the manufacturing shows that the former owner of the
cloak must have had a high social rank. The textile designer Bettina
Göttke-Krogmann worked over 1500 hours on recreating this “masterpiece of
germanic art of weaving”.
