Front view. The Mitsubishi Magna was introduced to the Australian public in 1985. It was manufactured in Australia by Mitsubishi Motors Australia in Tonsley Park, South Australia. The Magna was derived from Mitsubishi Japan’s designs, but was reengineered to suit the Australian market and conditions.
The Magna was manufactured as a direct competitor to the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore. Mitsubishi Australia recognised that car size was important to Australians and therefore made the car design wider. The name ‘Magna’ emphasises the size advantage, deriving from the Latin word ‘magnus’ which means ‘big’.
The size approach proved successful, the Magna’s interior was wider and its emissions were lower than its rivals. It was a strong competitor in the Australian market and in its first year won numerous motoring awards, including the 1985 Wheels ‘Car of the Year’.
